Need for Communication Protocols
Why do we need communication protocols?
1 Answers
Communication protocols are necessary to establish a common set of rules and formats that allow different devices and systems to communicate effectively and understand each other. Without protocols, devices would not know how to interpret the data they receive, leading to chaotic or impossible exchanges.
For example, if a computer sends data using a specific encoding and another computer expects a different encoding, the received data will be meaningless without a pre-defined protocol. Protocols specify details like data representation, signal levels, error control, and message sequencing. For instance, the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) define how data is fragmented, addressed, routed, and reassembled across networks, enabling global communication on the Internet. This ensures that a packet sent from one machine can be correctly received and understood by another, regardless of their underlying hardware or operating systems.
For further reading, see chapter 1 of Guide to Computer Network Security by Joseph Migga Kizza, which discusses fundamental concepts of network communication, or Internetworking with TCP/IP: principles, protocols, and architecture by Douglas E. Comer.
